NEWSMEN BRIEFING ON CARRIER OPERATIONS
1. AT 090700Z JUNE A SPECIAL BRIEFING ON AIRCRAFT CARRIER
OPERATIONS IN THE SIXTH FLEET DURING THE PERIOD 22 MAY TO
8 JUNE WAS CONDUCTED FOR 14 MEDIA REPRESENTATIVES ABOARD
AMERICA BY CTF 60, OPERATIONS OFFICERS, AND THE CARRIER
AIRWING COMMANDERS OF USS AMERICA AND USS SARATOGA. THE
BRIEFING FOLLOWED THE READING OF A STATEMENT PREPARED
BY COMMANDER SIXTH FLEET CONCERNING THE INTENTION OF THE
BRIEFING.
2. THE BRIEFING COVERED, IN GENERAL TERMS, THE MOVEMENTS
OF THE FLEET CARRIER TASK GROUPS FROM 22 MAY UNTIL 8 JUNE,
AND IN DETAIL FROM 4 TO 7 JUNE. FOR THE LATTER PERIOD THE
FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED:
   A. PRECISE LOCATIONS TO SHOW THAT AT NO TIME DID EITHER OF
THESE CARRIERS APPROACH THE AREA OF CONFLICT CLOSER THAN 200
MILES.
   B. PRECISE AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS TO SHOW THAT NO CARRIER
AIRCRAFT APPROACHED THE AREA OF CONFLICT CLOSER THAT 100 MILES.
   C. CARRIER ORDNANCE EXPENDITURES PROVING ROUTINE TRAINING
USE ONLY.
   D. CARRIER AIRCRAFT INVENTORY CHANGES PROVING NO ATTRITION
AND ADDITION OF ONLY TWO AIRCRAFT RETURNING FROM THE PARIS
AIR SHOW.
   E. CARRIER PILOT INVENTORY CHANGES PROVING SAME AS SUBPARA
DELTA ABOVE.
   F. DETAILED FACTS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST CONCERNING WHAT
SIXTHFLT CVA AIRCRAFT WERE FLYING ON 5 JUNE AND WHERE THEY
FLEW. ESPECIALLY EFFECTIVE WAS DATA SHOWING NO FLYING
FROM EITHER CVA ON 5 JUNE BEFORE 0800Z AND BOTH CVA'S OVER
450 MILES WEST OF ISRAEL.
   G. ADDITIONAL FACTS OF A TECHNICAL NATURE SUCH AS CATAPULT
LOGS SHOVING THAT PRESSURES USED WERE NOT SUFFICIENT TO
LAUNCH A COMBAT LOADED AIRCRAFT, WERE MADE OFFERED TO BE
MADE AVAILABLE ON REQUEST.
THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT WAS MADE IN THE NAME OF COMSIXTHFLT
CONCERNING THE INTREPID: "I AM ABLE TO CONFIRM THE FOLLOWING
WITH REGARD TO THE INTREPID:
   A. SHE CONDUCTED NO AIR OPERATIONS FROM THE FOURTH THROUGH
THE SEVENTH OF JUNE.
   B. DURING THIS PERIOD THERE WERE NO CHANGES IN HER INVENTORY
OF AIRCRAFT, PILOTS, OR ORDNANCE.
   C. AT NO TIME FROM FOUR THROUGH SEVEN JUNE WAS SHE CLOSER
THAN 260 MILES TO THE AREA OF CONFLICT IN EGYPT, SYRIA, OR
JORDAN.

OF COMPLETE ACCEPTANCE OF THE MATERIAL. BECAUSE OF THE
PRESSING NATURE OF THE INCIDENT INVOLVING USS LIBERTY
U. S. MEDIA FILED LESS THAN MIGHT HAVE OTHERWISE BEEN
